Birders' Bread Crust Apple Pie

Our original whole wheat crust pie with apples. Don't forget to leave some crust to feed to the birds....

  • Sliced whole wheat sandwich bread, and crusts cut off and inside pieces used as bottom crust. Crusts for top of pie.
  • Balance butter stick, melted
  • Apples (about 9), peeled, cored, and cut into slices , add lemon juice
  • Light-brown sugar
  • Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, (sugar cinnamon) plus more for serving (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Directions


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.Cut crust off and spread leftover squares of bread with butter and brown sugar. Line pie pan with bread squares. Bake until golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool completely.


2. Meanwhile, place apples in a large bowl, and toss with lemon juice. Stir in sugar, sugar cinnamon, and optional nutmeg. Put apple mixture into baked bread crust.


3. Top mixture with strips of whole wheat crusts patterned like a lattice pie crust.Brush with butter and light brown sugar. Bake until fruit mixture is bubbling, about 40 minutes and crust is crisp. Top with vanilla ice cream sprinkled with cinnamon
