Winning Bouquet
The winning bouquet in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver will wave with five B.C.-grown green spider mums in the centre, surrounded by layers of monkey grass, aspidistra leaves and hypericum berries imported from Ecuador.
June Strandberg, the bouquet designer and owner of Just Beginnings, teaches floristry to women who have left prison, are recovering from addiction, or have been victims of violence. It's a pretty amazing program, and Strandberg has even taken it behind bars, where she educates convicts. She believes it's her work with these correctional programs that secured the Olympic contract.
For the Vancouver Olympics the florists made 1,800 bouquets, 1,707 of which will be given to medal-winning athletes in the Olympics and Paralympics.
As you can see it's an all-green bouquet. The designer made sure the foliage is not being ‘taken from the jungle’ and that the farm itself operates in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way and has a reputable employment practice.”
Americans won 26 medals as of Feb 24th, 2010.
The Bouquet pictured was made up by Bachmanns in Eden Prairie.
