Prop: Janet Palmer

Janet Palmer was recently named Executive Director for People Reaching Out to People (PROP). She's been with the organization since 2008 after a career change from the private sector. "At that time, I decided that I wanted a change and do something that felt more meaningful to me and closer to my community," she recalled. PROP is a local food shelf and emergency service organization that serves Eden Prairie and Chanhassen. "I'm excited and honored to be taking over this role," she said.

PROP's mission is to compassionately provide comprehensive support to our neighbors in need that creates a path toward self-sufficiency.

PROP has been operating for more than 40 years. Today, it helps more than 1,100 local families in financial distress meet their basic needs, while providing additional services to help them on a path toward self-sufficiency. By offering a food shelf, housing and other emergency financial assistance, employment counseling and money management, PROP strengthens the community.

"Most people don't realize the depth of poverty in traditionally affluent suburbs such as Eden Prairie" states Palmer. Today, suburbs are home to the largest and fastest growing low-income population. "It's hidden, but the need is very real," states Palmer.

PROP works on the front-end, assisting families to keep them stable. Clients are often one tragedy away from a crisis situation; by providing housing support, medicine, or car repair, PROP can help avert the domino effect that may lead to homelessness.

PROP is in the middle of implementing its strategic plan, which places a large emphasis on seniors and youth.

PROP will keep expanding the Summer Food for Kids program and this year will pilot a senior grocery delivery program. PROP is also partnering with the Eden Prairie Foundation to expand Youth Scholarships.

In the long-term, PROP strives to remains relevant in how it serves the community. "I believe PROP belongs to the community and that together we make it strong," she said.
